We asked Ann Krinitsky, Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra Director, for her thoughts on the importance of music in young lives. Here is what she shared with us.
  • Why does music make a difference in the lives of youth?
Music is a universal language. Everyone responds to it in some way. To be able to create it yourself, and to participate in it along with other people, opens the door to unlimited personal and interpersonal growth.
  • The positive influence of playing music as a youth?
In our formative years, we’re learning essential skills of expression, communication, cooperation, and the ability to LISTEN, which may be the most underrated skill needed to build relationships and excel in a career. Music requires focus, dedication, critical thinking, fine motor skills, and so many other invaluable qualities and strengths.
  • Impact of music in young lives?
Some of the shyest, most introverted students come alive and gain confidence when they play music. It may be their best way, or even their only way, of effectively communicating with and connecting to other people. In the orchestra, making music together enables students to build enduring friendships within a like-minded community at rehearsals, concerts, and recording sessions, and by traveling together to perform at regional youth orchestra festivals and on international tours.

Marin Music Chest’s Longstanding Affinity with Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra
Founded in 1954 by Hugo Rinaldi, a 1938 Music Chest scholarship recipient, the Marin Symphony Youth Programs are proud to support and contribute to the musical training that promotes the high standard of Marin Music Chest scholarships. Many if not all of Marin Music Chest scholarship recipients who play orchestral instruments are MSYP members; in fact, all of the 2022 winners (outside of piano) are MSYO members. Our youth programs, which have been nurturing and training Marin’s young musicians for nearly 70 years, provide students with the opportunity to progress through three levels of ensembles, from the Overture String Ensemble through the Crescendo Orchestra to the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra. At each level, they aspire and strive to master the skills and abilities necessary to move on to the next. Our illustrious alumni have gone on to remarkable musical careers as performers, composers, and arrangers. In our orchestra, they have also developed the skills necessary to become doctors, research scientists, physical therapists, and so many other vital and noteworthy professions.
